"Just another day in The Wall" by Mike GodseyAt the end of August The Wall had a string of easy 4.2 days. Then on Wed. August 31 The Wall went EPIC! This video documents that day starting at dawn first as windsurfers on 2.9 to 3.2 sails rip on huge smooth swell. Then in the afternoon a few superb kiters pinched a mile upwind, over empty waters from Rufus, to work the crowded waters of The Wall. The hoards windsurfers and a few kiters made for great video imagery and an interesting test of the Rules of the Road. Since Arlington looked TOO windy with an average of 43 knots I headed to The Wall. The wind direction was not perfect for the fabled huge smooth swell The Wall is famous for but it still was pretty epic. "Marine Surge Alert" are words most Coast, Crissy and Peninsula customers dread hearing in our forecasts. But for those in the East Bay and all lovers of Sherman Island those words mean fog and strong cool steady winds. On Friday May 11 every weather service had the heat wave continuing and weak winds for most of the Bay. Then at 8:20AM we issued an "Alert" and a few hours later..... it happened. This amazing time lapse video starts at dawn with hot smoggy air and shows the marine surge hitting the Golden Gate mid day then blasting up the East Bay hills at night fall. Last fall Benjamin and I were hired to do the America's Cup forecasting. For the San Diego event we spent over a week on site doing the morning forecasts. And then in the afternoon we got inside view of the boats and the races. This video shows a lot of behind the scenes shots so you can see what these boat are like and their incredible acceleration. Remember the winds were in the 4-7 knot range during this video. Bites Dust April 19 PM

In our 2018 reality the antagonisms between Sand Bar kiters and Hatchery windsurfers have largely been resolved. But looking at forum posts from years past it is easy to imagine, if you are creative and immature, an alternative reality. The clips in this video came from a great day at the Hatch but a bad day for my video skill. Most of my clips captured crashes not grace. So I buried these on my hard disk... until one night I had a weird kitemare…. Before you click on this link, fair warning. This video is NOT for everyone and is probably in poor taste given our violent times.
